BIRDS

Nest Box Sponsorship Scheme

There are 24 nest boxes for birds installed in various locations across almost all of the commons the Trust looks after.

Since they were put up in 2008 we know that 10 have been used, principally by Blue Tits and Great Tits and in one case by Collared Doves in a box intended for an owl! It is quite likely that others have been used, but we have not been able to verify this at this stage.

These boxes have all been sponsored by supporters of the Trust.

We will shortly be contacting the sponsors inviting them to renew their support for another two years and if at the end of that process there are any vacancies we will seek new sponsors for them.

Birds seen on Southrepps Commons

If you are lucky enough to find any interesting birds not on this list, an email to Duncan Westlake at birdsightings@tiscali.co.uk would be greatly appreciated. The dates below represent the time of "latest spot".

Please go to http://www.rspb.org/birds/guide/index.asp. for more detailed information on any of these birds.

The Southrepps Golden Oriole

There was some excitement during May 2008 when one of our members identified the call of a Golden Oriole among the Poplar trees bordering School Common. Not commonly seen in these parts it is thought it was probably just passing through. Although the bird was unseen and therefore not photographed, an audio recording was made. This has been accepted as proof positive by the Norfolk County Bird Recorders. For a second opinion just ask the local pheasant who manages to get in the act about half way through.

To hear the recording click below and use your back arrow to return to this page.
